Brain health matters

Congratulations at the European Academy of Neurology and Paul Boon for the Brain Health Summit organised yesterday. My key takeaways:
- The brains of their inhabitants are the most important natural resource for many European countries.
- We can all train our brain, as we train our bodies (Peter Falkai, European Psychiatric Association.
- Brain health (neurologists) and mental health (psychiatrists) are two sides of the same coin
- We need better biomarkers and insights in the pathophysiology of headache, epilepsy, Parkinson, dementia, multiple sclerosis.
- The economic burden of neurological disorders accounts for 2 trillion euro a year (50% from headache!) (@Thomas Berger) => clear case for public intervention. We need to move from a European Brain Health Plan to National Brain Health Plans and can use outcome contracts to mobilise private sector funding.
- There are big differences between countries in the economic burden => inequality!
- Prevention, prevention, prevention.
- There is an inadequate availability of workforce in neurology
- Gender differences are not sufficiently taken into account (Marianne de Visser)

Honoured to represent EMSP - European Multiple Sclerosis Platform at the Summit.
